Carson Beck and Jalen Milroe had to replace big-name quarterbacks at programs with national title-or-bust expectations. His turning point may have come in the SEC opener against South Carolina, when Beck rallied Georgia from a 14-3 halftime deficit to win 24-14. And Milroe has done something even Young couldn't do last season: lead the Tide to the SEC title game. Then Milroe was back, leading the Tide to a perfect SEC season and making their biggest play in the Iron Bowl. Besides the similarities of replacing star passers, Beck and Milroe share another common ground.

For former President Donald Trump, all political signs point to a rematch with President Joe Biden, who defeated Trump in 2020 and increasingly has targeted Trump in his campaign ads. 11 Alabama uncorked 27 straight second-half points in rallying for a 34-20 victory over No. With its national title hopes on the brink, Alabama (7-1, 5-0 Southeastern Conference) turned in its most dominant half of the season. Milroe completed 14 of 21 passes for 220 yards, with a 46-yard touchdown less than a minute into the second half and an earlier 10-yarder to Jermaine Burton. Alabama turned Vols coach Josh Heupel's second failed fourth-down gamble shy of midfield territory into its first lead. The Tide looked like a complete team in the second half, though.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — Quinn Ewers finished what he started last season, passing for 349 yards and three touchdowns to lead No. 11 Texas to a 34-24 victory over third-ranked Alabama on Saturday night in a huge win for a program trying to climb back into national championship contention. This amounted to a welcome-to-the-Southeastern Conference moment for a program set to join Alabama & Co. next season. Alabama had its 21-game home winning streak snapped along with a 57-game regular-season binge against nonconference teams dating to Nick Saban's debut season, 2007. Alabama's Jalen Milroe delivered big plays passing and running, but also was picked off twice on bad decisions.

Sorority rush is a tradition at many colleges. But in the South, rush inspires the same passionate zeal as collegiate football. Thanks to TikTok, the University of Alabama’s incarnation of that tradition — peak neo-antebellum white Southern culture on display — is now a global phenomenon. Since it entered the zeitgeist in 2021, millions of people have followed Bama Rush, as if they’re royal watching through Mason-jar-tinted glasses. When a small phalanx of white coeds in Tuscaloosa self-organizes under the Bama Rush banner to promote their sorority, they are battling for ritual supremacy.

Mr. Lokhandwala and Mr. Dixon said in their note that they expected the sale to close in July; the company would then begin operating under new ownership. In the past, bidders sought to acquire Vice Studios, the film and TV production business; Virtue, its ad agency; and i-D, one of the company’s magazines. Vice, which had unsuccessfully sought to sell itself for years, filed for bankruptcy in May, with Fortress, as one of its lenders, in pole position to take over the company. It had since sought run a sale of the business in bankruptcy to see if it could kick up further interest. As the sale process proceeds, Vice has some pressing issues to sort out.

Blackstone relies on the REIT for about 17% of its earnings. Large redemptions have been seen at other such funds, with investment firm Starwood Capital informing investors last week that its $14.6 billion non-traded REIT also had raised the gates. There has also been a wave of redemptions at other non-traded Blackstone funds marketed to high net-worth investors. He added the redemptions did not mean the investors were not happy with the REIT and its profits. Blackstone has reported a 9.3% year-to-date return for its REIT, net of fees, a contrast to the publicly traded Dow Jones U.S.
Imani Perry's "South to America: A Journey Below the Mason-Dixon to Understand the Soul of a Nation" has been named the National Book Award winner for nonfiction. The book chronicles the Princeton professor's journey to her native Alabama, putting forth the idea that to better understand America, one must first understand the history and culture of the American South. "'Bama has a National Book Award," Perry said while accepting her award in New York City on Wednesday evening. In her tearful acceptance speech, the 50-year-old award winner said that she writes for "my people." The winners in each National Book Award category receive $10,000, NBC News reports, with nominees chosen by a five-person panel with judges including authors, editors and booksellers.

Oct 13 (Reuters) - A $140 million desalination plant is expected to be approved by California regulators on Thursday as the U.S. state contends with how to convert ocean water into drinking water amid the worst drought in 1,200 years. Instead of relying on water pumped from hundreds of miles (km) away, through the State Water Project or the Colorado River, the South Coast Water District would now have its own water supply. The Doheny plant would produce 5 million gallons of drinking water per day, more than enough to meet the needs of the district's 35,000 people. The Coastal Commission staff, which recommended rejecting Poseidon, favors building Doheny, which would be the 12th desalination plant approved by the regulator. The Doheny plant will use a sub-surface intake that creates a barely perceptible current.
Oct 11 (Reuters) - Cameco Corp (CCO.TO) and Brookfield Renewable Partners said on Tuesday they would acquire nuclear power plant equipment maker Westinghouse Electric in a $7.9-billion deal including debt, amid renewed interest in nuclear energy. Nuclear power is also key for countries to meet global net-zero carbon emission goals and could be on the cusp of a boom seen after the 1970s oil crisis. Cameco will own 49% of Westinghouse, while Brookfield Renewable and its institutional partners will own the rest. Westinghouse was acquired from Toshiba Corp (6502.T) by Brookfield Business Partners , an affiliate of Canadian asset manager Brookfield (BAMa.TO), out of bankruptcy in 2018, for $4.6 billion, including debt. Brookfield Renewable and its partners will pay about $2.3 billion for the deal, whereas Cameco will incur equity costs of about $2.2 billion.
